Community College Gets $2.4 Million Federal Grant

Full Description:

Prince George's Community College recently was awarded a $2.24 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor under the Community-Based Job Training Grants Initiative.

The funding will support programs of the college's new Hospitality and Tourism Institute, which offers an associate's degree program, one-year certificates, industry training programs and noncredit courses.

"The grant will enable the college to overcome capacity challenges such as hiring faculty and staff, finalizing the development of new curricula and courses and acquiring requisite training supplies," Daniel Mosser, vice president for workforce development and continuing education, said in a statement. "Roughly 960 individuals will receive tuition assistance for up to 30 college credits over a three-year life cycle of the grant."

Students interested in hospitality-related education and training will be eligible for full-tuition scholarships, and a portion of the funding will support the purchase of cooking equipment and the use of two kitchens available through the county public school system.

More than 30 Prince George's businesses, education groups, nonprofit organizations and government agencies partnered with the college to pursue the grant.
